The men's basketball team narrowly defeated Finger Lakes CC 68-64 on the road on February 5.
The Mid-State Athletic Conference contest featured multiple ties and lead changes, and an exciting set of closing minutes.
Finger Lakes jumped ahead with an early 11-3 lead and maintained a 19-12 lead with less than five minutes to go in the first half. Over the last 4:38, SUNY Broome outscored the Lakers 16-9 to take a brief 28-26 lead at the 0:52 mark before a Finger Lakes jumper at the 0:02 mark sent the game into the halftime break with a tie.
The Hornets' momentum from late in the first half carried over to early in the second half as SUNY Broome went on a 10-0 run over the opening five minutes. Finger Lakes closed the gap to four points and then to one with 11:10 to go. Just before the 10-minute mark, the teams traded baskets and leads. In the ensuing few minutes, SUNY Broome pushed ahead multiple times to go back up by six.
With 7:21 left in the half, the Lakers used a three-pointer to nudge ahead, 53-52. The Hornets eventually tied the game up at 55-55 and then surged ahead 59-55 by the 3:50 mark. Fittingly, Finger Lakes drew even again with 1:55 to play before the Hornets went back up by two just 20 seconds later.
Finger Lakes cut the lead to one with 22 seconds left on another big three-pointer. As the Lakers continued to foul to extend the game, the Hornets managed to make three of four free throws in the final 12 seconds to secure their road win.
Notably, SUNY Broome converted its field goals, three-pointers, and free throws at better percentages than Finger Lakes during the contest. The Hornets were also able to log more points in the paint and more bench points than the Lakers.
Dejon Williams led SUNY Broome with 12 points and seven rebounds. Braeden Davis came off the bench to go 3-4 on three-pointers en route to 12 points and five steals. Christopher Zielewicz had 10 points and eight rebounds while Wyeth Lamont added another 10 points.
