The men's basketball team looked to complete a double-digit comeback with a game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer, but the shot was just off the mark in an 88-85 loss to Hudson Valley CC on Sunday.
The Vikings jumped out to a lead at the onset of the contest and maintained it throughout, though SUNY Broome continued to stick around. A SUNY Broome bucket at the end of the first half cut the Hudson Valley lead to a manageable eight points heading into halftime. The Hornets got as close as five points in the beginning of the second half before Hudson Valley began extending its lead.
What was a gradual increase of the lead eventually turned into a 15-point advantage for Hudson Valley with seven minutes left to play. From that point on, the Hornets turned on a furious comeback, cutting the lead to just five points with two minutes to go, and then to two points with one minute left.
Down by four with 45 seconds left, Dejon Williams was fouled. He made the first free-throw to cut the lead to three, missed the second, grabbed his own rebound, but then could not get the follow-up to go. A missed three-pointer by Hudson Valley set up a chance for SUNY Broome to tie the game with nine seconds left after talking it over on a timeout.
In a wild sequence, Williams stepped out of bounds when receiving the inbound pass out of the timeout and turned the ball over, but then the Vikings gave the ball right back to SUNY Broome when they stepped out of bounds upon receiving their ensuing inbound pass.
With six seconds left, the Hornets got one last chance at a game-tying three-pointer. Braeden Davis had an open look in the corner off a pass from Ponce Williams, but the shot missed just as the final buzzer sounded.
D. Williams led the Hornets with 20 points while Christopher Zielewicz stepped up big with 18 points and five rebounds. Wyeth Lamont scored 10 points off the bench and P. Williams logged seven points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
SUNY Broome fell to 3-3 on the season with the loss.
