The men's basketball team led NJCAA Division II opponent Erie CC by as many as nine points on Saturday, but was outscored by 16 in the second half of an eventual 73-63 loss.
The Erie CC Kats are a familiar NJCAA Region 3 opponent, but compete at the Division II level in men's basketball.
SUNY Broome got off to a strong start against Erie, contending with the Kats early in the first half and then turning it on in the closing minutes of the half. The Hornets went from trailing 26-22 at the 6:00 mark of the first half to winning 39-30 at the 0:50 mark. The nine-point advantage was the Hornets' largest lead of the game, and SUNY Broome remained on top by six at halftime.
However, Erie opened the second half on a 12-0 run to take a 45-39 lead with 17:16 left to play. SUNY Broome quickly responded with a three-pointer to pull within three points, but the Kats maintained a modest lead the rest of the way as the Hornets could not cut the deficit any lower than four points for the remainder of the game.
Despite the loss to an NJCAA Division II opponent, SUNY Broome battled hard from start to finish, and produced positives in the form of double-digit performances from Ponce Williams and Dejon Williams. P. Williams had 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists. D. Williams put together a double-double with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Xavier Thomas-Davis added eight rebounds and Isaiah Sanders logged seven points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals off the bench.
SUNY Broome fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss.
