Baseball Swept By Onondaga To End Season

The visiting Lazers took both legs of the doubleheader from SUNY Broome on its home field, by scores of 8-4 and 12-5.
The Hornets were scheduled to play a doubleheader at Genesee CC on May 5 to close out the season, but those games had to be canceled due to inclement weather. They could not be made up since May 5 was the final day that regular season games could be played.
As a result, SUNY Broome was done for the year following the defeats to Onondaga, finishing 2026 with a 10-28 overall record. The Hornets went 9-19 in NJCAA Region 3 play and 4-14 in Mid-State Athletic Conference games.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 4, Onondaga 8
The two teams played a tight game until Onondaga pulled away in the sixth and seventh innings. After the Lazers scored two in the 1st, SUNY Broome made it 2-1 in the 3rd. Then Onondaga extended the lead to 4-1 in the 4th, but SUNY Broome made it 4-2 in the 5th. In the 6th, however, the Lazers scored another run to make it a 3-run lead. And then key was a 3-run seventh inning in which the Lazers grew their lead to 8-2. The Hornets added two runs of their own in the 7th but the initial separation by Onondaga was too much to overcome.
SUNY Broome starting pitcher Zechariah Clouston pitched 4.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs, five walks, and striking out one. Luke Grassi pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and one earned run, with four walks and no strikeouts.
Leadoff hitter Manuel Paulino had a hit and scored a run. Kaiden Cannistra had two hits, drew a walk, and scored a run. Santino Michitti went 1-3 with a double and a walk. Carmelo Alessandro had a hit, a walk, a run, and two RBI. Darlyn De Los Angeles had a hit and a run.
Peter Cruz drew three walks, while Bailey O'Connor had the Hornets' seventh hit.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 5, Onondaga 12
After holding just a 2-1 lead through the first two innings, Onondaga used runs in the 3rd and 4th to take a more-commanding 6-1 lead into the 5th. The Hornets closed the gap to 6-2, but then the Lazers erupted for six runs in the top of the 6th. SUNY Broome got three back in the bottom of the 6th, but Onondaga was able to win convincingly nonetheless.
The Lazers rattled off 14 hits while SUNY Broome had nine.
Ethan Matthews received the starting nod for SUNY Broome and went 3.0 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and two walks. Vernon Stevens followed Matthews and allowed two runs and a walk. Evan Persbacker then surrendered four earned runs on five hits and two walks over 2.1 innings. Hunter Thornton pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk, striking out one. Alex Lamoreaux pitched the final inning and didn't allow a hit, walking two and striking out one.
Cannistra added another hit and drove in two runs, also walking twice. Landon Hepditch had a hit. Michitti was 2-4 with two doubles. Alessandro was 1-3 with a run and two stolen bases. O'Connor doubled and drew a walk.
Jacob Falero went 2-3 with a triple, a walk, a RBI, and a run. Maximus Morgan was 1-2 with a run and two RBI.
