Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Mohawk Valley
The SUNY Broome baseball team split a doubleheader at Mohawk Valley CC on Saturday, dropping the first game 7-3 but winning the second 13-5.

The SUNY Broome baseball team split a doubleheader at Mohawk Valley CC on Saturday, dropping the first game 7-3 but winning the second 13-5.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 3, Mohawk Valley 7
The visiting Hornets took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st before the Hawks tied the score in the bottom half. Quality pitching by both teams' starters kept the next four innings scoreless. SUNY Broome went back ahead by one in the top of the 6th, but then Mohawk Valley capitalized on shaky pitching and a few fielding miscues to answer with five runs and a 7-3 lead. The Hornets could not respond in the 7th.
Luke Grassi made his second start of the season and delivered 5.0 innings of two-run (one earned) ball. He walked just three and struck out six. Brady Blair came on in relief in the 6th, pitching 1/3 of an inning and allowing two hits, five runs (three earned), two walks, and collecting one strikeout. Evan Persbacker pitched the final 2/3 of the 6th, surrendering no hits, no runs, and walking one.
Kaiden Cannistra set the tone at the top of the lineup from the two hole by going 3-4 with a run scored. Batting third, Santino Michitti was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored. Cleanup hitter Zechariah Clouston was 2-3 with a triple and two RBI. Darlyn De Los Angeles also had a hit and an RBI. Jacob Falero, Thomas Reis Jr., and Bailey O'Connor all registered hits, too.
The Hornets outhit Mohawk Valley 11-8 in the loss.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 13, Mohawk Valley 5
The Hornets continued their trend of scoring early this season when they struck for five runs in the top of the 1st in the second leg of the doubleheader. After two innings, SUNY Broome held a comfortable 7-3 lead. The Hornets added two more runs each in the 4th and the 5th to go up 11-4 after five innings. They added an insurance run in both the 6th and 7th.
Clouston got the start on the mound in this game and earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-1. He dealt 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, three runs, four walks, and he struck out four. Brady Mazur allowed two hits and one run with no walks and two strikeouts over 2.0 innings of relief. Peter Cruz closed out the final 2.0 innings allowing one hit, one run, no walks, and tallying two strikeouts.
SUNY Broome outhit the Hawks 16-6 in the win and played clean defense behind the strong pitching efforts, committing no errors.
With the split, SUNY Broome improved to 1-3 on the season. The Hornets will have the opportunity to take three of four games versus Mohawk Valley in the regular season as another doubleheader with the Hawks looms on Tuesday.
