The visiting Generals defeated the Hornets 9-0 in seven innings in the opening game, and then won the second game 13-2 in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
SUNY Broome fell to 5-13 overall with the two losses.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 0, Herkimer 9
Herkimer opened the first game with three runs in the top of the 1st, then scored two in the 5th, one in the 6th, and three in the 7th. SUNY Broome was held scoreless for all seven innings and was held to five hits.
SUNY Broome starter Vernon Stevens surrendered two hits and two walks while logging two strikeouts in his inning of work. Ethan Flagg then pitched the next 3.1 innings, allowing two hits, two runs, and three walks. Evan Persbacker recorded a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning of scoreless ball. Nicky Rubio-Reyes pitched an inning in relief and allowed one run while striking out one. Hunter Thornton and Alex Lamoreaux collaborated to pitch the final inning of relief.
The Hornets' first four hitters in the lineup were responsible for the five hits: Kaiden Cannistra was 1-3, Darlyn De Los Angeles was 1-2, Luke Grassi was 1-1, and Santino Michitti was 1-2.
SUNY Broome hitters combined to strike out eight times and could not draw a walk. Cannistra stole a base. The Hornets also committed two errors in the contest.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 2, Herkimer 13
The Generals continued their strong offensive showing by scoring early and often in the second game, with three runs in the 1st, five runs in the 3rd, and five runs in the 5th. SUNY Broome scored a run in the 1st and 2nd to keep the game competitive entering the 3rd, but then Herkimer broke out in the top of that inning.
Emmanuel Aponte-Cardozo started the game on the mound and allowed three hits and one earned run on four walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Zechariah Clouston, Gregory Inserillo, and Ichiro Edo combined to absorb the final 3.1 innings of relief.
Grassi had another strong batting performance by going 1-3 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot. Michitti added an RBI. Most impressive was Landon Hepditch, who went 2-2 with a home run. Grassi and Hepditch accounted for all three SUNY Broome hits.
SUNY Broome hitters did not draw a walk in the contest and were struck out 11 times. The Hornets committed five errors in the field.
