The women's soccer team hosted nationally-ranked #6 Mohawk Valley CC on Wednesday and was defeated 8-0.
The Hawks struck quickly, scoring in the eighth and ninth minutes to establish early control. Despite the early deficit, the Hornets created opportunities of their own when forward Zephora Brouillette broke free and pressed into the Hawks' box for a series of shots on goal. The SUNY Broome defense held steady until the 40th minute, when Mohawk Valley extended the lead to 3-0 heading into halftime.
The Hornets continued to claw back in the second half as Brouillette and Paige Weaver tested the Mohawk back line with counterattacks and the match stayed at 3-0. However, the Hawks' relentless offense put the contest away with five goals in a span of 16 minutes, beginning in the 60th minute.
Hornets' goalkeeper Madeline Hyzer made 14 saves to keep SUNY Broome in the game until Mohawk Valley's late offensive push.
The Hornets now sit at 1-5-1 on the season and will look to get back in the win column in a road opportunity against Erie CC on Sunday. The Hornets and Kats previously played to a 1-1 draw in Binghamton in the regular season opener.
