A go-ahead PK and a game-saving save prevented the SUNY Broome men's soccer team from pulling out a back-and-forth win against North Country CC last Saturday.
It was a dramatic match between the Hornets and the Saints, one that featured multiple ties and lead changes in addition to two successful penalty kicks.
SUNY Broome started the excitement in just the 10th minute of the contest, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by North Country, as Austin Galley sprinted to the open slot in the Saints' defense on a corner kick from Jacob Sansom and placed it perfectly into the goal in rhythm.
Another impressive play occurred 20 minutes later when North Country was set up with a corner of their own and a Saint delivered a header into the net to even the score at 1-1.
Opening the second half locked in a tie, the Hornets responded with another opportunity just six minutes in. Corey Cottrell regained an advantage on a penalty kick at the 51:00 mark to put SUNY Broome up 2-1.
The push-and-pull nature of the match continued just six minutes later when a Saint beat a Hornets' defender to pull even at 2-2. Both defenses tightened up and so another scoring play would not occur until the 83rd minute.
The second PK attempt of the contest, this time by North Country, resulted in a Saint deceiving the SUNY Broome goalkeeper to bury the kick for a 3-2 lead.
The Hornets continued battling back to try and even the contest once again. A last-chance opportunity arose in the final minute of play when SUNY Broome had a breakaway, but the North Country goalkeeper made a crucial save.
SUNY Broome and North Country each exchanged 12 shots; 11 of North Country's were on goal while three of SUNY Broome's were on goal. SUNY Broome keeper Andriy Grave collected eight saves in the match.
