The SUNY Broome women's track & field team posted three top-10 finishes when it opened its season at the Red Dragon Open hosted by SUNY Cortland on Friday.
Leading the way for the women was Gabriella Vazquez who finished 6th in the javelin with a distance of 20.75 meters. She also competed in the discus and logged a distance of 22.53 meters. She also reached 8.07 meters in the shot put.
Adding to the list of top-10 finishes, Aisling King finished 8th in the shot put with a distance of 10.77 meters, setting a new school record. King's mark surpassed the previous SUNY Broome record of 9.23 meters set in 2023. King met the National Championship qualifying standard with her result. She also threw 24.33 meters in the discus.
Hannah Sanford rounded out the top-10 performances for SUNY Broome in the season-opening meet with a 9th place finish in the javelin. She reached 18.32 meters. Sanford also competed in the shot put and logged a distance of 7.17 meters. Additionally, Sanford set a new school record for the discus throw with a distance of 28.92 meters, which also met the National Championship qualifying standard.
Sanford reclaimed the record from her teammate Vazquez who had set the previous mark at 28.85 meters last season. The women's track & field team set numerous records throughout the season last year, and the duo of Sanford and Vazquez routinely traded ownership of the discus record. Perhaps more of the same could be in store for 2026.
Finally, Sage Tifft competed in the 400 meter and 800 meter runs. She logged a time of 1:18.68 in the 400 and a 3:18.52 in the 800.
All in all, three top-10 finishes were logged, two school records were set, and two individuals qualified for Nationals in a successful start to the 2026 season.
